Embracing My Natural Curls + Why It's Made Me Happier

For most of my life, I've been at war with god-given hair. Being ashamed and unwilling to work with my frizzy curls, I was compelled to straighten (or straighten and then curl) my hair every day. All throughout high school and college, I would've rather been caught dead than wearing my natural locks. And if I didn't have time, I'd hide it away in a bun. But as you can imagine, life just kept getting busier and busier (a.k.a. dental school happened) and I decided that I didn't want to waste an hour a day on my hair. About the same time dental school started, I began to cut back on my straightening obsession, instead manipulating my hair with just a blowdrying technique, cutting down my prep time to about 30 minutes. But just recently, I've finally found happiness is my fully natural, air-dryed hair (with a little help from my favorite frizz-fighting product)! In fact, it's been approximately 3 weeks since I've taken heat to my hair and not surprisingly, my hair is starting to look much healthier! But most importantly, this new life change has given me more time to spend with the people I love and it has me feeling empowered and confident in myself. My parents always used to tell me that I looked best in my natural curls, and now I finally see what they've always seen. I feel beautiful, proud, and most importantly I feel like myself! This doesn't mean I've sworn off the straightener forever. I'll let myself dabble with straight hair every once in a blue moon, but it's no longer a crutch and that in it of itself is liberating. So I'd like to challenge all of you to take at a break from the hair appliances and embrace your natural hair, because it's part of who you are and therefore it's beautiful!

P.S. In today's post I'm wearing some new favorite products, like this unique tee which is only $12! I'm linking up the rest of the products just below. Also, because it's spring and the wide-leg pant trend is in full swing, I've also linked up some of my favorite styles for you to shop!
